Art For Innovations Sake - the genius of Cleese's observations on creativity

Innovation is usually described as a problem of intelligence - get enough smart people in a room, give them enough data, and a breakthrough will eventually follow. That model has produced plenty of incremental progress, but it has also produced decades of products that are technically impressive and humanly forgettable. It also ignores the importance of the role of creativity, as exemplified by the research conducted by psychologist Donald Mckinnon in the 70’s at Berkeley, and then immortalized by John Cleese’s classic 1991 speech on creativity, management and the role of the arts. McKinnon found that there was a negligible correlation between IQ and creativity, and rather that mindset and approach were more important in allowing natural creativity to function. Cleese’s masterful speech built on McKinnon’s work to argue where genuinely new ideas come from in the first place, emphasizing the importance of the operating style of individuals over their intelligence, as well as the room/environment itself together with the associated set of pre-conditions.
A foundation of the argument for Art's role in innovation is that it trains a capacity that engineering and analysis do not: the ability to sit with ambiguity long enough to see what isn't there yet. A painter working from a blank canvas isn't solving a defined problem with a known set of constraints. They are inventing the constraints as they go, testing forms that don't yet have names, discarding most of them, and trusting the process to eventually produce something coherent. That tolerance for unresolved possibility is a core characteristic that breakthrough innovation requires, yet the one that most technical training actively discourages. Engineering education rewards convergence - finding the one correct answer efficiently. Artistic training rewards divergence - generating many possible answers and evaluating them on criteria that aren't yet fully defined.
This is not an abstract distinction. Some of the most consequential design decisions of the last half-century came from people who moved fluidly between technical and artistic registers. Art also does something subtler: it keeps a culture practiced at metaphor and requires someone capable of holding two unrelated domains in mind at once and noticing the resemblance between them. That capacity is trained by exposure to art, music, and literature far more directly than it is trained by additional technical coursework, because the arts are, structurally, the disciplined practice of finding unexpected relationships between things.
None of this argues for less rigor. It argues for a different composition of teams and a different definition of expertise. An organization that undervalues the role artistic sensibility will keep producing solutions that function without ever surprising anyone. An organization that treats artists as legitimate contributors to the substance of the problem, not just its surface, gives itself access to a kind of thinking that spreadsheets cannot generate on their own. Innovation has never been purely a matter of intelligence. It has always also been a matter of imagination, and imagination is the one discipline artists have spent centuries perfecting.
